Ashley Road

RIBA Work Stages: 1 - 7

Project Description:

A substantial extension and refurbishment of a detached Victorian property in Thames Ditton. The existing two storey dwelling was extended to the rear at ground and first floor. The ground floor level was lowered to create a more generous floor to ceiling height and the roof was rebuilt to increase the first-floor ceiling height and create a new master bedroom suite to the second floor.

Lead Architect: Mark Watson
Budget: £0.4m
Contractor: LB Contractors
Duration: 12 Months

Additional Information

The property was purchased in an uninhabitable state which afforded a wonderful opportunity to address its layout and the size of the dwelling. Through extensions to the rear at ground floor and first floor the cellular living accommodation was enhanced through the maintenance of a formal Victorian living room and the introduction of a playroom and open plan kitchen, living and dining area. 5No bedrooms were created on the modified first floor and new second floor level. Through large sliding doors and a second floor Juliet balcony, the dwelling has an excellent connection to the private rear garden.

Whilst modern amenities were introduced throughout, the triumph of the scheme is its careful blend of traditional and contemporary details and spaces. There is a balance between cellular rooms and open plan spaces, generous floor to ceiling heights and excellent communal areas which allow the modest footprint to yield a substantial family home.

The project was led by Mark Watson whilst working at Concept Eight Architects Ltd.
